Why do people say that preppy is Abercrombie, Hollister, Aeropostale, and American Eagle?
I’m a prep and I feel offended. All of the preps that I know wear Sperrys, khaki pants, polo shirts, ribbon belts, chino shorts, North Face jackets, etc. They shop at J Crew, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Vineyard Vines, Brooks Brothers, etc. They go to Preparatory Schools, where they wear navy blazers with an academic symbol, khaki pants, and dressy shoes.
But now people say that preppy is all this cheap crap from Abercrombie and Hollister? Why do people misunderstand the groups?
Preps are the ones that go to rich boarding schools, own fancy cars, shop at Ralph Lauren and Lacoste, wear Sperrys, and play Lacrosse, tennis, golf, Polo, and horseback riding.
What’s the deal with Abercrombie and Hollister now?

You’re practically fighting over nothing. The kind of prep you’re thinking shops at raulph lauren, and so do “casual preps” that go to “abercrombie and hollister.” You just stated yourself twice.
Preps also can include aeropostale. Just shopping at abercrombie doesn’t mean they’re filthy rich and all that crap. And shopping at aeropostale doesn’t mean you’re “lower class” or whatever. It depends on what you LIKE to wear. Who cares about if you’re prep or not..
OK i am sorry but i dissagry with you 100% the thing is not everyone can break the bank on ralf lauren and lacost and brand names like that though i love them so much not everyone can go out and but them! Hollsiters and abrecrombie are preyyy because they sell nice denim shorts and cute polo shirts they are pretty showoffy there lables and almost all the cute and fun and pretty and preppy people wear them so it is a way to feel preppy while going to a public school becuase most people at public schools don’t wear what you are discribing! i hope after reading this you understand preppy people more
dude you have it totally right. I am a preppy person. i live in greenwich ct, go to prep school, where all the brands you named, vv is my town for godsake, along with lacoste, rugby(not rl), jcrew, brooks brothers. so we are the prep poster children. i have the same problem. AF is not prep. As for all the haters, prep is a way of life so we really can’t stop being who we are. Prep is here to stay whether you like or not.

I do agree with you that a true prep buys the prestigous, good quality, EXPENSIVE clothing
But when you bump everything down to middle-class standards…American Eagle, Hollister, and abercrombie tend to be more expensive compared to other stores, so I guess people just assume it’s expensive, most of the people who wear it are white (you know its true), everyone has it…it must be preppy.
EDIT: Abercrombie & Fitch is not what I consider “cheap”, but I guess I don’t have the kind of money that you do.

I absolutely adore ralph lauren!
But out of all of those others I think American Eagle is the nicest.
And being preppy is definitely a lifestyle. Just like you said.
What I hate the most is when girls try to get that “beachy” hollister look and they put on a ton of makeup and hair product and end up looking fake as hell. I do understand you though. Its annoying when all people will wear is these abercrombie mall brands, like thats not real style at all. I do wear some of it but I make it work.
It’s the same thing that goes down with other social/clothing styles that are being categorized by “labels”.
When people say “preppy” I guess they just mean the style, which if you think about–actually comes from the actual “Prep” look that consists of all the things you just mentioned.

Abercrombie is “casual preppy”. Its modeled after the prep style but distressed to look more rebellious.
Have you seen the prices at Aberocrombie? Besides those are only the preps you know. I think people are talking about public high school preps.
